Hepatitis B is caused by infection with the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). The incubation period from the time of exposure to onset of symptoms is 6 weeks to 6 months. HBV is found in highest concentrations in blood and in lower concentrations in other body fluids. Hepatitis B is liver inflammation caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). HBV infection can be acute or chronic.
Hepatitis C (HCV) is a chronic viral infection which causes inflammation of the liver. This chronic inflammation causes scaring which can lead to cirrhosis and further complications. There are about 4 - 5 million Americans infected with HCV. Free Hepatitis C testing is available for patients living in the greater Houston area.
Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is liver inflammation caused by a buildup of fat in the liver. Many people have a buildup of fat in the liver or fatty liver disease (10% to 20% of Americans) up to 5% of those having NASH.
